Hi. I'm Chris, and I'm here to talk about one of Okuma's top 5 most underutilized technologies...5-Axis Auto-Tuning.

Dialing in a 5-axis machine can be a long and tedious process of probing and tweaking, but this OSP control technology lets the machine do all of the work. Five-axis machining centers have more than 10 geometrical errors that can possibly occur. There's no way a machine can be perfect because there are tolerances clearances and other things that can affect the way it works.

Five-Axis Auto Tuning takes a target sphere and probes it at a multitude of different spots throughout the travel range to automatically find discrepancies. We know where the target should be based on mathematical data, but once the machine probes it, we know where it will actually be based on how the machine works. 5-Axis Auto Tuning helps us understand the mechanical characteristics of a machine so that in the background we can make compensations and adjustments to accurately tune out any geometrical errors.

5-Axis Auto Tuning is a relatively quick and easy process. There are multiple levels of detail based on how intricate you'd like to get. Once auto-tuning is complete and the settings are stored, the geometric compensation is applied in the background whether in manual, MDI or automatic mode, so regardless of how you are operating your machine tool the best possible accuracy is will be achieved. Okuma's auto tuning technology makes five-axis machining much more approachable. It truly can save you a lot of time and wasted material.
